Athol Fugards drama, Master Harold :: Athol Fugard Master Harold Essays

Athol Fugard's dramatization, Ace Harold . . . What's more, The Boys, was composed during a period of incredible clash in South Africa, where he was raised.  Fugard was conflicted between his mom, who was Afrikaaner, (1291) and his dad, who was of English not too bad (1291). These contrasting impacts made Fugard utilize the conversations among Sam and Hally to exhibit the strict, racial, and political strains of his lifetime in South Africa.   The conversation among Sam and Hally about who was a man of extent (1300) speaks to the strict pressures of Fugard's lifetime in South Africa between the developing confidence in advancement what's more, Jesus Christ's instructing of Creation.  Hally says that Charles Darwin was a man of greatness, (1300) on the grounds that he was someone who profited all humanity (1301).  He respects Darwin for his Hypothesis of Evolution (1301), which as per Hally, demonstrates where we originate from and what everything signifies (1301).  Sam completely can't help contradicting Darwin's Hypothesis of Evolution (1301) in light of the fact that development is as opposed to the Bible's instructing on Creationism, also, he says that since it is in a book it doesn't mean [he's] got the opportunity to trust it (1301).  Sam accepts that Jesus Christ (1302) was a man of size (1300).  Hally is clearly against Sam's recommendation of Jesus Christ, on the grounds that Hally clarifies that he is an agnostic (1303).  This difference among Sam and Hally is extremely only a case of the strict pressures in South Africa during Fugard's lifetime between the Hypothesis of Evolution, (1301) which was getting progressively acknowledged, also, Christianity, which was instructed by Jesus Christ.   A second conversation among Sam and Hally that happens after Hally discovers that his dad has returned home shows the racial pressures of Fugard's lifetime in South Africa.  When Sam begins addressing Hally about how he treats his dad, Hally becomes furious and discloses to Sam that he is stepping on risky ground (1321).  Hally likewise discloses to Sam that his mom is right(1322) about notice [him] about permitting you to get to recognizable (1322).  The peak of the contention is when Hally reveals to Sam that he is just a hireling (1322).  This is the principal observable explanation that Hally makes that exhibits the racial strains experienced in South Africa.  The following racial explanation Hally makes is the point at which he reveals to Sam that his dad is his manager on the grounds that he's a white man and that is sufficient for [him] (1322).

Canterbury Tales :: essays research papers

The Canterbury Tales is an assortment of records about an excursion explorers made to and from the Canterbury Cathedral, formed by British author Geoffrey Chaucer in the late 1300’s. â€Å"Chaucer extraordinarily expanded the esteem of English as a scholarly language and broadened the scope of its lovely jargon and meters† (Encarta 1). In the stories, the host offers a challenge to the pioneers which requires them to recount to four stories during their excursion . Chaucer cleverly coordinates the scenes with each other and furthermore dazzlingly portrays the character, conduct, and general lifestyle of an assortment of parts of society in the Medieval Ages. The Canterbury Tales comprises of twenty-four stories, two of which are incomplete. One of these incomplete records is the Tale of Sir Thopas. The Tale of Sir Thopas starts with the storyteller portraying a reasonable and courageous knight who is from the most distant nation of Flanders. It proceeds on portraying this knight, Sir Thopas, as an attractive man who was talented at chasing, horse riding, wrestling, and arrow based weaponry. The entirety of the lady of the land yearned for him, yet Sir Thopas neglect every one of them. At that point one day, riding through the woodland, the knight hears delightful feathered creatures singing tunes of adoration. After hearing this, Sir Thopas hustles to ride away in light of the fact that his heart is sore as there is no lady on the planet to his make.      The knight at that point reviews a fantasy he had where his dear would be a mythical being sovereign. He kept riding until he found a mystery place called the Land of Faery. There he met an extraordinary monster whose name was Sir Oliphant. The monster undermined Sir Thopas to leave the land where the Queen of Faery dwells or he would be murdered. In the wake of hearing this Sir Thopas addressed that when he has his protection them two would battle until the very end. This scene is a case of how Chaucer â€Å" Gives the Tale of Sir Thopas a humorous send-up instead of other progressively genuine stories that in a roundabout way stigmatize English literature† (Payne 33).      Sir Thopas came back to his realm where he set himself up for his fight against the monster. His joyful men cheered him with stories of old sentiments, they brought him sweet wine, an imperial spicery of ginger bread, and fine material to cover himself. At that point he dressed himself in elaborate protective layer. He had a lance of fine cypress wood, a seat of rewel bone, and a shield of strong gold.

Developmentally Appropriate Practices In Relations To Students

The National Association for the Education of Young Children ( NAEYC ) characterizes formatively fitting example ( DAP ) as the Å" model of rules and rules for best example in the consideration and guidance of juvenile children ( Developmentally Appropriate, 2009 ) . DAP draws on insight picked up from investigate on the improvement of children what's more on the comprehension of strong instructive plans so as to propel most extreme procurement and advancement in kids ( Developmentally Appropriate, 2009 ) . DAP ( 2009 ) is of import since, when utilized, it assists teachers with making instructive judgments that are suitable for the understudies Ëœ age gathering, set finishes for students that are both contesting and accomplishable, and ensure purposefulness in the entirety of their guidance designs. The conclusions that teachers make in their schoolrooms can conceivably hold an extraordinary effect on understudies Ëœ securing encounters. Positive larning encounters lead to future positive larning practices, for example, progression and flexibleness ( Developmentally Appropriate, 2009 ) . While doing conclusions sing the guidance of their understudies, educators must take into history the general formative highlights and larning capablenesss of children in the age scope that they are learning furthermore the single highlights and larning capablenesss of students inside their schoolroom ( Developmentally Appropriate, 2009 ) . All parts of advancement and securing are of import and interconnected, and it is non until an educator to the full comprehends where their students stand truly, subjectively, and sincerely that solid judgments sing their guidance can be made ( Spano, 2004 ) . The judgments being made by teachers lead to the area of finishes in the schoolroom. Not just do teachers require to ensure that understudies accomplish these closures, yet they other than need to contest students to build on the cognizance they as of now have to make a higher level of comprehension and advancement. These difficulties should ever be introduced as the accompanying consistent measure fitting to the child Ëœs period of improvement ( Developmentally Appropriate, 2009 ) . As a rule, the periods of child advancement are all around archived and follow an anticipated arrangement ( Spano, 2004 ) . Be that as it may, the facts demonstrate that each single child arrives at each period of advancement at an alternate clasp which makes it of import for educators to cognize the general highlights of the age bunch each piece great as the single students Ëœ highlights. On the off chance that a teacher is non aware of their understudies Ëœ single formative degrees, finishes might be s et either unreasonably high or too much low, and larning will non happen ( Developmentally Appropriate, 2009 ) . Another ground that DAP is of import is that DAP guarantees deliberateness ( Developmentally Appropriate, 2009 ) . Deliberate teachers utilize their insight of their understudies Ëœ improvement to be after all features of their classification, from the schoolroom set-up to the utilization of arranged learning plans to the sorts of evaluations managed. Educators must comprehend that improvement and larning take topographic point best in condition of affairss where the child is unafraid in their milieus and that positive obtaining encounters shape their intention ( Helping your child, 2005 ) . They ought to other than keep up in head that children learn in an arrangement of various ways, so varying assaults to the stuff ought to be made. At the point when educators plan their classifications with formatively fitting purposes in head, a substantially more useful obtaining condition is made ( Developmentally Appropriate, 2009 ) . Since the significance of formatively fitting examples has been characterized, a detailed depiction of the highlights of the subjective, affectional, and psychomotor advancement of youngsters runing from age 12 to sixteen will be investigated while talking the effect that these highlights have on guidance and securing. The formative analyst, Jean Piaget, arranged the periods of intellectual improvement in kids ( Anderson, 2004 ) . In his hypothesis, there are four periods of intellectual advancement ( sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal operational ) ( Anderson, 2004 ) . Early youngsters ( around ages 11 to 13 ) , says Piaget, see the entry from the solid operational stage to the formal operational stage ( Anderson, 2004 ) . Teenagers at this stage ought to go off from the develop of egocentricism, or the dread that one Ëœs position is non needfully the situation of individual else ( as refered to in Malerstein Ahern, 1979 ) . Another feature of this section is that youngsters move from solid plan to progressively digest thought, expecting that they can accept about inside informations that do non allude to an existent item or occasion. Ideas, for example, love are more understandable to fledglings than to more youthful children ( as refered to in Malerstein Ahern, 1979 ) . Plus, people in the formal operational period of improvement can accept all the more experimentally ( Anderson, 2004 ) . This implies, when given an occupation, the individual will go about work trip the activity by sorting out theories and demonstrating every speculation until the correct outcome is reached ( as refered to in Malerstein Ahern, 1979 ) . Young people in this age scope become dynamically worried about the great beyond rather than the present with early fledglings being concerned predominantly with the nearby henceforth while in the middle of youngsters ( age 14 to 16 ) are increasingly worried about future reasons for living and life programs ( Spano, 2004 ) . These people are going increasingly intrigued by their ain power, what's more in the assessments of others ( Helping your child, 2005 ) . The idea of immature egocentricism is in a general sense the improvement of anxiety ( Elkind, 1967 ) . Young people for the most part have thoughts that everybody is watching them, known as the whimsical crowd ( Elkind, 1967 ) . This may originate from the physical adjustments that they are sing ( for example , pubescence ) , which will be examined in more thing along these lines on. Another signifier of immature egocentricism attached to physical improvement is the idea of individual creation, where people see themselves as a t last alone and perchance top notch ( Elkind, 1967 ) . The findings of psychological improvement on obtaining and guidance at this age degree are somewhat of import. Since youngsters currently have the limit with respect to extract thought, their verbal critical thinking achievements are a lot more prominent ( Developmentally Appropriate, 2009 ) . Educators would now be able to use request based securing at a further developed degree ( Developmentally Appropriate, 2009 ) . For outline, in the natural science schoolroom understudies at this level of psychological improvement might be take an applicable subject, build up an examination request, signifier speculations, test the theories, watch the results, decide, and give the significance of the discoveries to different classmates ( Mississippi Science Framework, 2001 ) . Socially and inwardly, youthfulness is an extremely problematic clasp ( Helping your child, 2005 ) . During pubescence, sex endocrines, substantial adjustments, and anxious pruning ( the cutting dorsum of new apprehensive tracts ) lead to inconceivable temper swings ( Helping your child, 2005 ) . This is other than a clasp when youngsters are building up an individual singularity and feeling of self image ( as refered to in Hamachek, 1988 ) . Erik Erikson Ëœs hypothesis of the eight periods of advancement areas that the greater part of import stage for this age degree is stage five: singularity versus independence disarray ( as refered to in Hamachek, 1988 ) . In this stage, people are get bringing down to set up a steady self-idea that does non adjust. In any case, Erikson other than says that people in this stage can drift between being sure of themselves and uncertainness which might be because of the fast adjustments that young people understanding during pubescence ( as refered to in Hamachek, 1988 ) . In stage four of Erikson Ëœs hypothesis, the single starts to build up a feeling of industry and lower status ( as refered to in Hamachek, 1988 ) . This implies by age about age 12, fledglings ought to be conscious of their ain ability to deliver things each piece great as the way that they may non be each piece acceptable at certain things as others ( as refered to in Hamachek, 1988, Helping your child, 2005 ) . A feeling of lower status makes mindful emotions about oneself which may take the fledgling to move bashfully or forcefully yet close to infer or lose intention in scholastic ventures ( Spano, 2004 ) . Other than at this age, youngsters are going off from dependance on guardians and closer to communication with equivalent gatherings ( as refered to in Hamacheck, 1988 ) . They start to esteem the suppositions and associations of their companions over the estimations and contributions of their folks, and they other than start to take inclusion in building more grounded associations with individuals outside their prompt family unit ( Spano, 2004 ) . Along these lines, peer power per unit territory can be a main consideration in conduct ( Helping your child, 2005, Spano, 2004 ) . Despite the fact that youngsters are looking for independency from their folks at this age and finding their single characters, they can other than return back to Acts of the Apostless of immature in the midst of accentuation ( as refered to in Hamachek, 1988 ) . One must keep up in head that simply in light of the fact that fledglings have the visual part of juvenile adults, they are still marginally kids intellectually and genuinely ( Kipke, 1999 ) . So in the schoolroom, educators ought to recover to put closes that are questioning yet non too much contesting ( Developmentally Appropriate, 2009 ) . Indicating a test that can be practiced with some endeavor gives the understudy a feeling of affirmation in their ain capacities which can take to a more noteworthy feeling of independence, while demonstrating unthinkable testing can hold negative impacts on confidence and dissuade

Guess Whos Coming to Campus

Guess Whos Coming to Campus Recently, I was walking around the Illini Union when I noticed a sign. Visually, it wasnt a special sign, but as it turned out, it was one that would lead me to something pretty neat. When I looked more closely at the sign I noticed it said in very plain font JB for Governor, Room 104. I knew that this had to be a reference to the candidate for Illinois governor, JB Pritzker. I rushed over to Room 104 and met a very nice young woman standing in the middle of the room, all alone in front of a dressed-up stage covered with campaign imagery and the customary microphone for a speaker. I asked this woman if JB would be coming to the Union, and to my thrill, she said, Yes, in about an hour he will be here. I returned to Room 104 an hour later and listened as the candidate for governor spoke about his platform and vision for the state of Illinois. Afterward, I even had the pleasure of taking a selfie with him. I couldnt believe that my regular day at the University of Illinois had turned into an adventure of meeting the potential future governor of Illinois. This wasnt the first time that our campus has surprised me with an amazing guest. I have to add that I am not alone in my feeling that Illinois is great at bringing special guests to our campus. Just a week ago, several of my friends were starstruck when YouTube star Tyler Oakley came to the Union. Illinois is a college that attracts big names. During the height of the primary election season last year, Senator Bernie Sanders came and held a rally at the ARC, which is across from the residence hall (Snyder Hall) that I was living in at the time. Not only was it awesome that someone like him was coming to visit our campus, but it was especially cool that he was literally going to be speaking only a crosswalk away from where I lived! That same spring, I was fortunate enough to meet rapper Hoodie Allen when he came to campus for the annual Spring Jam concert on the Quad. I had been a fan of his for so long that meeting him was pure joy. Campus events such as Spring Jam have allowed me to see amazing acts right before they become super famous. For example, rapper Post Malone performed at Spring Jam earlier this year. Keep in mind that he was not nearly as famous as he is now, and looking back on it, I still cant believe I actually saw Post Malone on the Main Quad. I realize that these experiences are unique to Illinois because of our universitys amazing reputation. Big names and accomplished individuals choose to visit our campus because of the quality of students and faculty right here in Champaign-Urbana. These famous people know that our community is open-minded and ready for new ideas and experiences with a eagerness to celebrate the many aspects of creativity. All of these awesome guests that I have already been fortunate to cross paths with leave me with one question: Whos coming to campus next? Jacob Class of 2019 I’m an Advertising student within the College of Media. My hometown is a place called Fairmount, Illinois, which is about 30 minutes from campus. I began my Illinois journey in the Division of General Studies.

Neil Postman The vision for future - 825 Words

Neil Postman: The vision for future (Essay Sample) Content: Neil Postman: The vision for futureAll human beings operate within particular social frameworks. In an explicit attempt to broaden the understanding of social contexts in the contemporary societies, people have varying opinions and views on the social fundamentals that take part in shaping individualsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ lives. Neil Postman, a contemporary social critic, analyzes the prophesies on the future vision poised by George Orwell and Aldous Huxley in their novels "1984" and "Brave New World" respectively. His basic assertion is that the Huxleyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s vision has more relevance in the todayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s world compared to Orwellà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s. Although that is debatable, the Huxleyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s views present a reflection of the todayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s society.Orwell argues that in the future people will be engulfed by the oppression from external sources. However, that is not the case in the present society. The widespread literacy and information access has increased human i nterconnection making it difficult for oppression to thrive. This is in support for the Huxleyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s argument that the future generation will love oppression rather than hating it. He adds that people will love technologies to an extent that their individual thinking capacities will be narrowed. This is true as the present man relies on technology so much that even simple tasks that require less thinking are viewed as nightmares. For instance, the introduction of scientific calculators in schools has greatly affected the mental development and intellectual growth of students. The simple mathematical problems that require ones wit to unravel the answer are often done using calculators. This has generated a breed of kids that are shallow thinkers and less creative compared to the past generations. The Orwellà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s argument that the future generation will be composed of people who would ban books does not reflect the current situation. The introduction of e-learning is a pe rfect example of peopleà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s unwillingness to read books. The society is undergoing a rapid transformation from paper to paperless transaction. In this regard, the views of Huxley are more applicable today. The world has become a global village where there is free flow of information and resources. The technological innovation has undeniably been the foundation of globalization. Human beings are increasingly becoming the channels through which information flow is highly activated. According to Huxley, the current generation suffers from passivity and egoism. These are the outcomes of society that exhibit an immense freedom of access of information. Thus, the Orwellà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s assertion that there would be deprivation of information is not premised on any valid explanation. Similarly, there are many methods and channels for which one can obtain any kind of information that he or she requires. The Orwell prophesy that the truth will be cancelled from people by the government or any other authority is not true. The freedom mass media have played a pivotal role in creating awareness to the public. Civil rights activities have successfully eradicated the challenge of censorship that most government use against media houses. In addition, the emergence of social media and the internet have proved to be effective in ensuring that the public gets the necessary information without restrictions. Huxley supports this by claiming that there would be no need for anyone to attempt hiding of any kind of truth because it would be irrelevant.Orwell predicted that the future society would suffer from the captivity of culture. He suggested that people would unanimously adore the cultural doctrines of their respective societies. He continued that there would be a widespread manipulation of people as a result of the distorted perceptions of the reality. However, this unrealistic in the present world. This is because the challenges fac...

William Shakespeares Play The Tragedy - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 6 Words: 1652 Downloads: 6 Date added: 2019/07/30 Category Literature Essay Level High school Topics: King Lear Essay William Shakespeare Essay Did you like this example? William Shakespeares play The Tragedy of King Lear is a dark tale of betrayal whose popularity is seen in its many productions and adaptations. The play itself not completely original, in fact, as the main plot and characters are Shakespeares versions of the British cleric Geoffrey of Monmouths recounting of the story in History of the Kings of Britain. Shakespeare does, however, add other characters to his play that are not in Geoffreys version of the story, like Edmund and Edgar who have no direct equivalent in History, but Geoffreys influence on these characters are clear.. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "William Shakespeares Play The Tragedy" essay for you Create order In the play, there is no mention of Cordelias nephews, Margan and Cunedagius, but the roles they fulfill in History match the roles of the Edmund and Edgar. One adaptation of the play, King Lear directed by Richard Eyre, supports the significance of how Edmund and Edgars roles in the play correspond to the roles of Cordelias nephews. Through the staging of the brothers, how the film chooses to modify and deliver their lines, and how they interact with other characters exaggerates Edmund and Edgars influences in the tragedies of the play. The staging of the film King Lear places most of the audiences focus on the acting and plot of the story, rather than highlighting a specific time or place. It appears that two large rooms are used for all the indoor scenes and minimal, simple props signal a change in scene or location (King Lear). In addition to this, the film uses the original language of the play but shortens or removes entirely many of the long speeches given by characters (King Lear). These modifications drive the plot forward, as many of the speeches explain the motives of characters actions which can sometimes dilute the impact of the actions they are speaking about. The combination of simplistic staging and altered lines leaves the portrayal of the characters the focus of the film, which offers more direct points of analysis between the play and its film adaptation. First, Shakespeares Edmund and Edgar have clear connections to Geoffreys Margan and Cunedagius. Both pairs are marked by a desire for power beyond what they have. Cordelias nephews feel that because she is a woman, she should not rule, and so they believe they should rule instead of her (Geoffrey 33). Similarly, Edmund is offended that his legitimacy and age cause him to be unworthy of an inheritance, which he believes he is entitled to, though Edgar will receive one because he is legitimate and the firstborn (Shakespeare 1.2.1-23). To gain power, Margan and Cunedagius imprison Cordelia, where she commits suicide (33). While Cordelia does not kill herself in Shakespeares play, Edmund does imprison her and stages her murder as a suicide (5.3.303-6). There is also a parallel in the demise of Margan and Edmund. In History, Margan no longer wants to rule with his cousin, so he attacks Cunedagius claiming his right to the throne as the eldest of the two (Geoffrey 34). Cunedagius then bests Margans army and kills his cousin himself (Geoffrey 34). This conflict between the cousins is a story of the victim to the hero for Cunedagius. It is seen in the play when Edmund also attempts to gain control over Edgar, and when Edgar discovers this, he challenges his brother and bests Edmund in a duel in which he dies (Shakespeare 5.3.358). Again, while there is no explicit connection between Shakespeares Edmund and Edgar and Cordelias nephews in History, there are many parallels. The film emphasizes this important connection. The most noticeable way the film exaggerates Edmund and Edgars roles is how they stage these characters. Both brothers are on screen or placed in a scene where they are not specifically noted as being on stage in the play. One example is of the first scene of the play, in which Gloucester, Kent, and Edmund are the first characters to enter (Shakespeare 1.1). The film, however, shows Edgar on screen first, writing in a notebook, while Edmund looks at Edgar from behind with a devious smile, as if he is thinking about his plot against Edgar (King Lear). By introducing the brothers first, the film suggests that their story is a focus of the play, rather than a secondary story to Lears. Their introduction also foreshadows Edmunds actions against his brother and presents Edgar as an innocent victim. Additionally, the brothers were staged separately in the film in surprising ways, like Edmund noticeably eavesdropping on a conversation when he enters a scene too early at the end of Act 1 in the film. In the play, Goneril and Regan are discussing what they will do with Lear, and when they exit, Edmund enters at the start of Scene 2 (Shakespeare 1.1.329-355). In the film, Edmund enters while the sisters are still talking, and, thus, makes his first impressions on Goneril and Regan (King Lear). While he does not talk in this part of the film, the way he looks at them is with obvious flirtation, and the film is planting the seed of competition between the sisters early on. Edgars unexpected placement is seen less throughout the film, but he is depicted holding Lear as the king dies (King Lear). The film is drawing on the relationship Edgar and Lear fostered while out in the storm together to make their connection stronger than that between Lear and Kent or Lear and Albany, who are both witnessing Lears death as well (King Lear). This connection also suggests a familial bond, which reinforces that if Edgar was Cordelias nephew, he would be Lears grandson. Even without the connection to Histroy, Edmund and Edgar are prioritized through their placement in the film. As mentioned, the film changes the original lines of the play for primarily functional purposes. There are also modifications of lines that reveal insights about the characters motivations, especially for Edmund and Edgar. One way the film does this is by voicing over soliloquies, treating them as thoughts, rather than the actors voicing them allowed on stage as in the play. An important occurrence of this change is at the beginning of the film when Edmund is talking to Gloucester and Kent. In the first scene of Act 2 in the play, Edmund expresses his resentment about not inheriting from his father because he is illegitimate and that he will overcome it (Shakespeare 1.21-23). The film places a part of this soliloquy into his conversation with Kent and Gloucester as thoughts (King Lear). The effect of introducing Edmunds intentions early in the film puts a focus on his character as being the villain of the brothers. Similarly, Edgars soliloquy is also voiced over as thoughts in the film when he is leaving the shelter to help take Lear to Dover (King Lear). However, his thoughts contrast Edmunds because he is recognizing that his grief does not compare to Lears [w]hen that which makes me bend makes the King / bow and so comes to a selfless conclusion (Shakespeare 3.6.118-9). Presenting the brothers as opposites in the film by paralleling their soliloquies gives the audience a further reason to think of Edmund as a villain. This prompts their fight at the end of the film a nd play and supports the rift between Margan and Cunedagius in History. The way the film portrays the interactions between Edmund and Edgar and other characters also maintains the brothers importance to the plot. Further support for the concept that Edmund is evil while Edgar is innocent can be seen in their first interactions and their clothing. Though it is stated that Edgar is some year elder than [Edmund] in the play (Shakespeare 1.1.20), the film makes no such explicit distinction, though Edmund behaves as if he is older (King Lear). This show of age difference is seen in Edmunds pretend concern for his brother when he warns Edgar about their fathers anger at him as if he is playing a protective, brotherly role (Shakespeare 1.2.166-9). In this scene, Edmund is wearing dark clothes and has short, dark hair which heavily contrasts with Edgars loose, white shirt and long hair (King Lear). The audience can see visually how different the two are on the outside which corresponds to their motives and actions in the whole film. Aside from the actions with each other, Edmund and Edgars interactions with other characters seem to be prioritized in the film. One important instance of this is toward the end of the film, what is the end of Act 4 and the beginning of Act 5 in the play. In the last scene of Act 4, Cordelia and Lear reunite for the first time after her moving to France (Shakespeare 4.7). The scene before is Edgar killing Oswald and discovering the plot to kill Albany (4.6). However, the film skips the scene with Lear after Edmunds scene and goes directly into the first scene of Act 5 in which Edmund promises his love to Regan (Shakespeare 5.1.9-20). This second occurrence of Edmund and Edgars story being placed before Lears story is further evidence of the importance the film places on the brothers story. The audience is shown that Edmund and Edgar are not only important but just as important as the title character, King Lear. Overall, the film makes deliberate changes to situate Edmund and Edgars story as one of the main focal points of the movie. The influence of Cordelias nephews in History on the brothers in the play is also clear. Shakespeares integration of the brothers into the story of King Lear, as opposed to placing them at the end like Geoffreys Margan and Cunedagius, adds another dimension of betrayal and tragedy to the play. In the end, the film and play both point to Edmunds final confession: What you have charged me with, that have I done, / And more, much more (Shakespeare 5.3.195-6). Thus, the audience is to believe that Edmund has done more harm than the characters know, and more than the audience knows themselves.
